The Further From Nature, the Harder the Heart

    Improving Indigenous Health

This Ute quote resonates with one of Dr. Dave’s two major passions, improving Indigenous Health. The modernization/westernization/colonization of the Indigenous peoples and how moving away from the Healthy Traditions provided by Nature caused a significant rise in heart disease.  First Nations communities should be amongst the healthiest in Canada yet First Nation men die eight years earlier than the Canadian average and women die five years earlier. Heart disease is 50% higher, Type 2 diabetes is four times higher and TB almost 10 times higher than the Canadian Average.  In this keynote, Dr. Dave shares what First Nation communities can do to reverse this alarming disparity and inspires First Nation audiences to turn back to the Wisdom and Values of their Elders and the Traditional Healing methods that served their communities for centuries. Dr. Dave affirms that by resuming connection to Nature, the land, in all its forms, both quantity and quality of life can be improved.
